Claude + MCP for Automation
Advanced guide • 18 min read • Technical background recommended
Claude Code is the game-changer. Combined with Model Context Protocol (MCP), you can build AI agents that actually run your business.
What Is Claude Code + MCP?
Claude Code: An interface where Claude runs your code, reads files, and interacts with your systems in real time.
MCP: A protocol that connects Claude to your tools (Slack, Salesforce, spreadsheets, databases, etc.) so it can take actions.
Together: Claude becomes your VP of Operations. You tell it what to do, it builds the system, runs it, and reports back.
Workflow Example: Hiring Agent
You want an agent that:
- Receives resumes from your email
- Scores them using your rubric
- Schedules interviews in Calendly
- Sends offer letters
- Reports weekly hiring metrics
Using Claude Code, you can build this in 2 hours. The agent runs autonomously. You check in once a day.
Building Your First Agent
Step 1: Define the Task
Build me a hiring agent that:
1. Reads resumes from a folder
2. Scores each on: technical fit, culture signals, growth trajectory (1-10 each)
3. Creates a ranking spreadsheet
4. Sends me daily summaries via email
Rubric:
- Technical fit: 7+ years in [STACK] or proven equivalent
- Culture signals: ownership, learning bias, startup experience
- Growth trajectory: IC → Lead → Manager or deep specialist
Use Claude Code to build and test it.
Step 2: Claude Builds It
Claude will:
- Write Python script to read your resume folder
- Create scoring logic based on your rubric
- Set up Google Sheets API to write results
- Create an email notification system
Step 3: You Run It Daily (Or Schedule It)
Once built, the agent runs autonomously. Each morning, you get a summary of top candidates.
Advanced: MCP Connections
MCP lets Claude connect to external systems. Available MCPs include:
- Slack: Claude reads/sends messages, threads, files
- Google Workspace: Sheets, Docs, Gmail
- Salesforce: Opportunities, leads, deals
- Linear: Issues, sprints, milestones
- Custom: Your own API
Example: "When a prospect replies in Slack, Claude reads the message, scores their intent, and if high-intent, creates a Salesforce opportunity."
Real Use Cases for Founders
Sales ops automation: Claude reads incoming emails → scores leads → updates CRM → sends follow-up emails → reports weekly pipeline
Recruiting pipeline: Claude reads resumes → scores candidates → schedules interviews → sends offer letters → tracks acceptance rate
Content calendar: Claude reads your talking points → generates social posts → schedules on LinkedIn → tracks engagement
Customer support triage: Claude reads support tickets → assigns priority → drafts responses → routes to right team
Limitations & When NOT to Use Agents
Agents are great for:
- High-volume, repetitive tasks (screening, scheduling, reporting)
- Tasks with clear rubrics (scoring resumes against defined criteria)
- Multi-step workflows (read → analyze → act → report)
Agents are bad for:
- Decisions requiring human judgment (hiring final decision, customer refund eligibility)
- Tasks requiring brand voice (customer-facing emails should be you, not AI)
- Complex negotiation (use Claude as advisor, not agent)
Cost: Is This Worth It?
Claude Code costs $20/month. If it saves you 5 hours/week, that's $100/hour productivity.
ROI: $20 to save $500/month in labor. Yes.
Getting Started
- Identify your most time-consuming, repetitive task
- Write a clear rubric or rule for Claude to follow
- Use Claude Code to build a prototype
- Test with 10 examples
- Deploy and automate
